The widespread adoption of corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies seems to do little to assuage popular perceptions that big business is morally suspect. Companies promoting their ethical credentials are often accused of hypocrisy or ‘greenwash’. But should we expect businesses to set out to ‘do good’ in any case? Adam Smith argued almost 250 years ago that businesses best benefit society inadvertently, simply by pursuing their own interests.
