To mark the world’s population reaching 7 billion on Halloween 2011, WORLDbytes has launched this hilarious parody of modern day Malthusian thinking. The programme features talented Blood Brothers star and ex-RSC actor James Hirst as the central character, Bill. For Bill the news of 7 billion is a Halloween nightmare. His solutions include: getting rid of ‘thickies’, euthanasia, gelding and paying African women not to have children- a carbon offsetting scheme first proposed by the Optimum Population Trust, now rebranded as Population Matters. Bill gets his over-consumption paranoia from the Guardian and he’s going for the cull. This parody reflects WORLDbytes’ concern to challenge the profoundly anti-human roots of overpopulation ideas.

A pot that will grow food for your family and the entire world from the comfort of your own home is now a reality. A breakthrough in food production, a single pot will grow food for an entire household. In less than a week, you can grow your own tomatoes, parsnips, peppers and greens without worrying about the well-documented health and environmental risks of genetically modified food. What’s more, famines will be a thing of the past and nasty supermarkets will die a natural death, as they should. So get your pot, some seeds and start growing.

How can you keep your food fresh and your drinking water cool in a hot third world country? The pot-fridge is the latest in a range of savvy inventions for the poor in the developing world. An idea revived by NGOs working in Africa, this nifty invention is now being used by farmers and their families in warm climates to preserve their food and keep the insects away. This desert cooler does not require electricity or any power source, apparently making it ideal for poor rural villages and sustainable living fans. According to the NGOs, a pot-fridge will keep your tomatoes fresh for almost three weeks and all it takes is some sand, water and two pots. Is it time to give up on ‘white goods’ and get earthy? The programme shows us how to make one.

In this month’s Tales from the Missionary Hut, our globally concerned inventors lend the poor in the developing world a hand with the help of much vaunted pedal power. Based on a design by Nottingham students, an intriguing machine extracts nut oil with bicycle wheels. Is it nutty or will it get those lazy leg muscles moving and help our peers hit oil? Apparently, it has already taken off.

As we head into the deepest recession since the 14th century, a new report published by the Mutual Agony Foundation reveals an unprecedented level of cooperation between employers and staff in solving financial problems. The recent situation at BA where almost 7,000 workers agreed to participate in the company’s ‘work for free’ initiative is just one example of the solidarity workers are showing employers. Now BA has announced it will build upon its success and merge with Honda to form a new super company known as Bonding plc. But how have these breakthroughs been achieved? Our reporters were granted exclusive access to film a ‘town hall’ staff meeting at the newly formed recession-proof, super company to find out.

In the latest attempts to tackle S.A.D. or Sustainability Attainability Deficit and stimulate happiness, the government has unleashed a clown onto the miserable streets of East London, established happiness classes and happy monitoring officers. A £900 billion government initiative aims to help people find inner contentment and happiness by learning how to want less through shopping less and aspiring to less. By providing NVQ qualifications in happiness known as G.R.I.N. and mass happiness events, the ‘H is for Happy’ government minister anticipates a surge in happiness within months.

Reporting on the humanoid ethical shopping phenomena that makes us especially happy and smug, alien correspondent Asbo goes out on the streets to find out more. He is physically sick over a fair trade cappuccino, shop lifts ethical body products for testing and checks out smelly goats for Africa. Zlog, in the comfort of the spaceship, chews over why humanoids like to shop ethically and discovers that: “the goats smell and presumes this may be why they are given as gifts to the poor in the developing world.”

Spoon gangs roam the streets armed with big spoons, little pointy spoons and plastic un-recyclable spoons. One spoon crime victim tells us she will never be able to visit her grandfather again as he used to play the spoons. The campaign for a cutlery free world say the crime is spreading and the special spoon squad declare a spoon amnesty. This panic report mocks the hype surrounding knife crime and suggests we should be wary of the fear mongering; especially as the proposed solutions are more punitive laws and regulation of young people’s lives.
