Free Film Training

View feedback from participants here

WORLDbytes provides free ‘on-the-job’ film training for 16-25 year olds. The next intensive course with spaces available is an unusual one as it’s specifically designed for volunteers wishing to join WORLDbytes crews filming the Battle of Ideas weekend festival of debates at the end of October. The training will take place over an intensive weekend on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th October at the Kingshold Community Centre in London E9. This training weekend involves long days learning camera, lighting, sound, production and hands on shooting live debates for new volunteers and ‘top up training’ for more experienced hands. No previous skills are required but a keen interest in social issues is a must as our ‘citizen TV’ programmes prioritise content over style and the Battle of Ideas festival involves shooting serious and challenging debates on contemporary issues.

To take part in this opportunity you need to complete the application form below. You also need to commit to filming at and attending the full weekend of the Battle of Ideas festival which takes place at the Royal College of Art on Saturday 30th & Sunday 31st October. Before applying you are advised to look at the Battle of Ideas programme so that you are clear what this event entails. Once accepted on the training you will be registered for the festival and your ticket paid for by the charity.

The deadline for applications is Friday 1st October, but don’t wait around as places will fill up fast. If your application is accepted, you will also need to attend a group interview on Monday 4th October at 7:30pm at the WORLDwrite Centre in Hackney, East London. Details will be sent to you as soon as your application is accepted. Priority places do go to volunteers who get active right away and you can get the details of our next new volunteer open evening here.

Before completing your form please read this carefully

We do not want CVs, we do need to know you understand that this is Citizen TV and the content is what matters. We welcome newcomers to the UK, you don’t need any film skills at all and we won’t judge you on your English. You do need to convince us you are passionate about ideas and want to make challenging alternative news programmes and reports. We cover a huge range of issues but as an education charity committed to international understanding and global equality we do have some basic principles that we promote on our news channel WORLDbytes.

We believe in:

  • Open Borders and celebrating more people on the planet
  • Economic growth & serious development for all globally
  • Challenging all forms of prejudice, anti-democratic and anti-human trends
  • Freedom of speech and advancing civil liberties
  • Challenging distrust, fear and intervention in everyday life
  • Supporting our peers globally managing their own affairs without foreign intervention
  • Advancing new knowledge, ideas and critical thinking

To help you get to know WORLDbytes and for us to get to know you, we ask that you watch at least the programmes listed below. Please let us know your thoughts on the issues covered by leaving your comments in the spaces provided. Remember these programmes are all made by people learning to film, we are not interested in your critique of their film making or editing skills – we want to know if you get the points made! This is the most important part of your application as we need to know you would like to help create similar programmes as a volunteer.

Please complete the entire form and we will be in touch
