How will we feed Britain after Brexit?

1:09:56

The Brexit vote throws the future of British farming into question. The EU was notorious for its huge and wasteful subsidies to wealthy landowners in the name of helping farmers. The government has guaranteed subsidies to continue until 2020 as a stop gap, but what if the EU decides to hit UK farmers with tariffs, and will farms be able to rely on seasonal workers from EU countries in future? Given the opportunity to completely rethink farming policy, what should the future of farming look like?

Filmed at the Battle of Ideas, the speakers are Dr Guy Smith, vice-president, National Farmers Union; Professor Tim Benton, champion, UK Global Food Scarcity Programme; Molly Scott Cato MEP, Green Party MEP and author of ‘The Bioregional Economy’; Laurence Olins, chairman, British Summer Fruits. The chair is Rob Lyons, science and technology director, Institute of Ideas.
