Lobbyists: the new hidden persuaders?

Lobbyists: the new hidden persuaders?

Is lobbying, ‘the next big scandal waiting to happen’? A series of lobbying controversies suggest so. The existence of firms created to influence politicians reinforce suspicions that politicians are buyable. In response, the government is considering a statutory register of lobbyists, which could result in fines and imprisonment for ‘improper attempts’ to influence politicians. Is it a disaster that political debate is conducted behind closed doors by paid professionals? Or is there a danger that demands for control of lobbying will undermine a key element of democracy? Speakers include: Simon Burall, Eliane Glaser, Oliver Foster, James Matthews, Mary Monfries, Chair Kirk Leech
