Getting started with podcasts

Podcasts basic concepts
Q: What are podcasts and how can I listen to them?

Podcasting lets you automatically receive the latest programs of your chosen programme as soon as it’s available. With our podcasts, you can take your favourite WORLDbytes programmes with you on the move and listen wherever and whenever you like.

You can “subscribe” to receive a podcast, rather like you might subscribe to a magazine and get it delivered. WORLDbytes’ podcasts are free, and you can stop receiving the files at any time. If you’d rather not subscribe, you can download podcasts individually.

In order to subscribe for a podcast, you need an internet connection and a piece of podcast software which is usually available free of charge. Once you have installed this software, it will check WORLDbytes for new programs and automatically download them for you.

You can then listen to podcast programs on your computer, or transfer them to a portable device, such as an mp3 player.

Q: What is an mp3?

MP3 is a popular digital music format for sound files, that are small in size but still reasonably high quality.

Q: Do I have to pay for podcasts?

No. All WORLDbytes podcasts are free.

Q: What software do I need to play a podcast on my personal computer or laptop?

To listen to a program you will need a media player, a piece of software, that can play mp3 files. The operating system that controls your computer should come pre-loaded with a media player.

Popular media players include Windows Media Player, Quicktime, RealPlayer, iTunes and Winamp.

Podcasts subscription
Q: Do I have to subscribe in order to listen to a podcast?

No, if you would rather not subscribe, you can still manually download programs of a podcast to your computer.

See the “How do I download a podcast individually?” section of this guide for further information on how to listen podcasts without subscribing them.

Q: Why should I subscribe to a podcast?

You can “subscribe” to receive a podcast, rather like you might subscribe to a magazine and get it delivered each week.
Podcasts are normally managed automatically by a software like iTunes or Zune which will search the web to find the latest programs and automatically deliver it to your computer or portable device.

Q: What software do I need to subscribe to a podcast on a desktop computer or laptop?

You need to install a piece of software which will search the web to find the latest programs and automatically deliver it to your computer.

This software is usually free, and the top services are iTunes, Zune, Juice and Doppler.

Q: How do I subscribe to a podcast on a personal computer or laptop?

Subscribe using iTunes or Zune: iTunes and Zune are popular applications used to subscribe and listen to podcasts. They can be easily downloaded and installed from the internet.
Once you have installed your chosen software simply click on the relevant button and the software will do the rest.

Subscribe using My Yahoo or Google reader: My Yahoo and Google reader are bother popular online feed readers used to subscribe and listen to podcasts. All you need to use them is an email address.
Simply click on the relevant button and the software will do the rest.

Subscribe using a feed reader: Clicking on this link will take you to the actual podcast feed page where you can subscribe to the podcast in various ways.

Some browsers may display instructions at the top of the page in which case simply follow them.

Or, you can copy and paste the feed URL from the browser address bar into a new feed in your podcast software or feed reader – just look for buttons or links marked “Add feed” or “Subscribe”.

Q:How do I unsubscribe from a podcast?

Unsubscribing from a podcast will depend on the software or feed reader that you are using but here are some general guidelines:

Select the undesired podcast (feed), in the software or feed reader that you are using.

Next, look for commands or buttons with “unsubscribe”, “delete”, “remove”, “remove selected feed” or similar sounding text and carry out the action.

Sometimes simply selecting the feed and hitting the delete key may do the trick.

Note that unsubscribing from a podcast will not necessarily delete previously downloaded programs and deleting the actual files may require further action on your part.

Download individual podcasts on your personal computer or laptop
Q: How do I download a podcast individually?

If you would rather not subscribe, you can download individual programs of a podcast to your computer.

You should be able to do this by opening the page with the program you want to download, right clicking on the “Download this program in MP3″ link and choosing “Save Target As…”, “Save Link As…”, or a similar option.

You should then be asked where to save the program on your computer. All programs are mp3 audio files.

If you’re having trouble downloading on a Mac the following advice may help:

Right Click: On a mouse that has two or more buttons click the link by pressing the right hand-side button [OS X 10]

Control-Click: Hold down the ‘ctrl’ key whilst pressing the mouse button on the link [OS X 10]

Click and hold: Click and hold the mousebutton down on the link until you get a menu of options [Mac OS 9 and earlier]

Playing podcasts on my smartphone, tablet or mp3 player

If you have a mobile phone which is capable of storing and playing MP3s you will be able to play WORLDbytes podcasts. There are a number of ways to transfer mp3 files onto your phone:

Via a USB lead

The simplest way is to connect your phone to your computer using a USB lead, and then ‘drag and drop’ MP3 files across from one device to the other. Many phones are supplied with a USB lead, but if you are in any doubt, consult your phone’s user manual.

On a memory card

If your phone has a removable memory card (e.g. a micro or mini SD card) you could remove this, and insert it into your computer or laptop, if it has a card reader. You should then be able to drag and drop podcast MP3 files as described above. When you re-insert the memory card into your phone, you should be able to browse and play them.

Sync between phone and computer

You may be able to synchronize your mobile phone with your computer so that any podcasts you have subscribed to on the computer are automatically copied to your phone. Generally this requires special software, and you should consult your phone’s manual or contact the manufacturer for more help. Using your phone’s browser If your phone’s has a web browser that supports XHTML, you may be able to go to the normal WORLDbytes website and download the podcast over the air. However, it’s important that you check your data tariff with your mobile operator as this might be expensive.

MP3 Players

Each mp3 player will be different but, basically, you need to plug your player into your computer (usually via a USB cable) so that it appears as an external device. Simply locate the podcasts programs which you have already downloaded on your computer, and then ‘drag and drop’ them onto your MP3 player. Once the files have transferred, you will be able to disconnect the mp3 player and listen to the podcast programs on the move.

Some mp3 players also come with software to allow you to “sync” the podcasts you have subscribed to on your computer with your player. This means that each time you plug in your mp3 player, the software will automatically transfer the latest programs of your chosen podcasts to it. How this works depends on the brand of your mp3 player and the software you are using.

Q: Can I burn podcast programs to CD/DVD?
