The gamification of society: time to grow up?

‘Gamification’ – the use of gaming techniques in real-world settings – has become a major force in recent years, first in marketing but increasingly in other areas, too. Some are suspicious of using techniques pioneered in the marketing and entertainment industries as a method of building serious engagement in other parts of life. This serious debate filmed at the Battle of Ideas asks: Is gamification just the latest marketing gimmick, or can it offer genuine benefits to how we work and interact with each other? What are the ethical and practical challenges posed by implementing game mechanics to non-game scenarios in the workplace or classroom?

I think this was a fantastic discussion with lots of ideas put forward. I agree with the reward and competion part of games but I doubt that politics can ever be developed into games. Using games to help understand information is a great idea however we digital natives and most users are wary of the neutrality that the game posseses just like documentaries or books.
