What is … identity?

54:47

identity

In an age of identity politics, categories like race, gender and sexuality are at the fore of political discussion. These categories which might have once been considered accidents of birth are understood as ‘lived experience’ exclusive to one’s identity group. Is there any place for a universal humanism in all this, uniting people regardless of their various identities? Is there any escape from the identities we’re branded with, whether in the form of racial prejudice or imputed privilege? Are we defined by who we are, born a certain way? Or do our experiences make us who we are? What does identity mean today?

Filmed at the Battle of Ideas 2017, the speakers are Dr. Christine Louis-Dit- Sully Dr. Graeme Archer and Ella Whelan. The chair is Niall Crowley.
