After Scotland’s referendum, the UK holds together-but only just. In Ukraine, anti-EU, pro-Russian movements led to Russian’s annexation of Crimea and the declaration of a ‘people’s republic’ in Donetsk. Yet alongside this regionalism comes increasing supranational integration. The EU is growing in size and power, especially since the Eurozone crisis. The idea of a traditional sovereign nation, making decisions with a well-defined demos, is weakening. Why are established countries struggling to retain loyalty?
