Why Luther still matters – religious conscience and individual liberty

1:11:59

Luther

Whether or not Martin Luther actually nailed his 95 theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg on 31 October 1517, as a disputed tradition claims, he certainly started a process that would change Europe and the world. 500 years on, this panel explores Luther’s life, ideas and legacy. Luther brought religion to the masses: translating the Bible into the vernacular and preaching from the pulpit while his doctrine of sola fide (by faith alone) was liberatory.

Filmed at the Battle of Ideas 2017, the speakers are Kate Maltby, Dolan Cummings, Professor Aaqil Ahmed and Jon O’Brien. The chair is Angus Kennedy.
